JILL SOBULE....in her own words

I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. I played guitar since I was five and secretly wrote songs for myself until I was sorta discovered busking the streets of Spain. Back in the States, I had bands, played solo, and waited a lot of tables. In 1990, I came out with my first recording, produced by Todd Rundgren. It had the song "Too Cool To Fall In Love," which I still hear in grocery stores around the nation. Two years later, I recorded my second CD, produced by Joe Jackson. I was dropped and it never came out. I was heartbroken, ready to quit music, but then realized that I had no marketable skills.

So, I struggled for another two years, working for a wedding photographer, and playing in semi-depressing bars. In 1995, I was signed by Lava/Atlantic Records and had my two hits ("Kissed a Girl" and "Supermodel"). I won a GLAMA award that year and was recognized on the street. My second record was a critical success. I was on a lot of "10 Best" lists. But it sold like shit. So, I was dropped again. I can't really remember what I did the 2 years before I was signed by Beyond Records, but I did write a ton of songs. Oh, I did get some notoriety as a "political troubadour" for some NPR-ish stations. Also, I played lead guitar for Lloyd Cole and the Negatives, whose record came out in the spring of 01.

Pink Pearl came out in 2000. It is my best record.

I have toured relentlessly over the last 2 years headlining and was personally asked by Lloyd, Warren Zevon, Don Henley, and Paul Weller to open on their tours. I also got to sing "I'm a Believer" to inaugurate Neil Diamond into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame. The other performers that night were Paul McCartney, James Brown, Carole King, and Hanson.

In the last few years, I have developed a large Internet fan base. When I accidentally stepped on my laptop and smashed it to pieces, my fans set up a web page to buy me a new one. I felt kind of embarrassed by their help, but I took the computer anyway.

I guess I should add that I have had songs in several movies: Harriet the Spy, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Clueless, Grace of my Heart (which I'm in the movie for a frame or two), Mystery Men, etc. Also, whenever there is a lesbian scene on TV, "I Kissed a Girl" is sure to appear.
